How I Turned Making Beats Into A Full Time Occupation
It was April 2018 when I opened my e-mail inbox and there was an e-mail from Spotify for Artists saying: "Good news! You've been added to a Spotify editorial playlist." I remember feeling like I just won the lottery. I was so excited, because I knew what this meant. When I opened this e-mail I was at the design studio where I was working my full time job. A job that was making me feel useless and miserable. I got up from my desk and I called my friend that I made beats with. A couple weeks earlier we made the commitment to consistently release beats on Spotify because we had heard that there were people making a living from that. But we never expected that only a couple weeks after we started releasing we would get selected for a playlist. We celebrated on the phone. I was jumping up and down right there in the office. My colleagues at the design studio looked at me strange because they didn't understand why I was so happy. But I knew that I was about to leave them.
Two months later I got my first pay check from Spotify through the distribution platform that I was using and I couldn't believe my eyes. This was more than I made every month at my job. It didn't take long before I quit my job and started pursuing a career as an independent musician. This was my first little success after 7 years of making beats. And it didn't make me rich or famous, but it gave me the confirmation that I wasn't crazy and that it was possible to do with my life what I actually wanted to do with it. This confirmation was all I needed to really go for it, and to start treating music as my profession.
In the years before, I gave up many times. Many times. I was deeply insecure about my music. I didn't think it deserved any attention, I thought everyone was better than me, I thought my music sucked and I could never do it professionally. I was comparing myself to my peers and to producers I looked up to, trying to copy them. I didn't trust the process of developing my own style. I remember I used to take my music down from SoundCloud every time I didn't feel like it got enough likes. I thought people were constantly judging me and my music. For me, this insecurity has been the biggest obstacle in my career. If I trusted the process more and my ability to improve over time, I could've "turned pro" a lot faster.
And I think this is a big problem for a lot of people who want to be an independent musician. We let limiting beliefs stop us. We get crippled by fear of failure, fear of judgement, fear of ridicule. But this is not our fault. It looks like everything about society is almost designed to make us feel inadequate, incompetent and like we shouldn't even bother trying. Everyone is dragging everyone else down because everyone is scared to really go for what they love.
People come up with tons of excuses for why they don't just do what they actually want to do. Excuses to not start a career in music, presented as facts. But most of these are really just excuses. And I would like to debunk some of those misconceptions, that I used to believe as well, right here.

Session 1: Software, Hardware and Getting Started
In session 1 We’ll go through all the hardware and software you need to get started and how to install everything. We will talk about how you can get started without spending insane amounts of money on gear.
Session 2: Your First Project, Interface, Browser & Channel Rack
In session 2 we’ll have a tour through the FL Studio interface and a quick introduction to all the most important functions. In this session we are immediately going to make our first beat. That’s right were going to get started right away. The goal of this session is to get you started without being overwhelmed or confused by all the technical stuff.
Session 3: Piano Roll, Multiple Patterns & Playlist
In session 3 we’re going to talk about how you can make melodic patterns using the piano roll function inside FL Studio and how to combine those with drum patterns to make beats. The goal is to give you the tools to make melodic beats without needing to know any music theory.
Session 4: Sampler & Waveforms
In session 4 I’m going to show you how you can use the FL Studio sampler to shape samples into cool sounds. This will help you understand sound and give you the knowledge on how to bend samples without needing any expensive hardware.
Session 5: Playlist Arranging, Labelling & Song Structuring
Session 5 is going to be about combining all of your elements and arranging them into a full song in the FL Studio playlist. This will help you turn your loops into full length songs while avoiding them becoming boring.
Session 6: Working With Audio Clips
In session 6 I’m going to show you how you can produce with audio clips in your arrangement as an extra production technique for in your production bag of tricks. This will help you improve your versatility as a music producer and make interesting productions without spending any money on additional software.
Session 7: Sound Design With Envelopes
In session 7 I’m going to talk about sound design and the further shaping of sounds using envelopes. In this session you gain knowledge on how to create interesting sounds and operate synthesisers while using only FL Studio software.
Session 8: Mixer & Working With Effects
Session 8 is going to be all about the mixer and all its functions and how to work with effects on your sounds. In this introduction session we’re going to walk through the functions of the mixer in a clear step by step way so you’ll be ready to use it in your productions.
Session 9: Working With Automation
In session 9 I’m going to show you how you can use automation in your arrangement to make your sounds move and stay interesting throughout your entire song.
Session 10: Sampling, Chopping & Looping
Session 10 is going to be a sampling basics masterclass where I touch on sampling techniques like looping and chopping and how you can do that in FL Studio. In this session you can learn how to use samples in different ways to create interesting tracks with an old-school feel without doing anything illegal.
Session 11: Recording Audio & Working With MIDI
In session 11 we are going to go out of the computer and into the real world because we’re going to walk through how you can record audio into FL Studio through a microphone or a different audio source and how you can use that in your production. This will help you get ready to be a producer in sessions with recording artists and also increase your skill set as an all round music producer.
Session 12: Finishing A Song
Session 12 is going to be a little more philosophical and a little less technical because this session is all about finishing a song. I’m going to share with you my criteria of when a track is finished and that can hopefully be a tool for you to not get stuck finishing your track. This session comes with the finished-song-checklist.
Session 13: Mixing Basics
Session 13 is the mixing basics masterclass. In this session I’m going to show you how you can mix your song inside FL studio, without spending money on external mixing plugins, to make it sound right and ready to master. We are going to touch on how to use volume, panning, EQ, compression and reverb for your mix. This session comes with the mixing-checklist.
Session 14: Mastering Basics
In session 14 we are going through the mastering basics. In this session you can learn how to make your song completely ready to release. And how to export it high-quality so it’s ready to be enjoyed on Spotify, Apple Music and other services.
Session 15 (BONUS): Publishing Your First Song
And then finally, in the last session, number 15, I’m going to take you through the process of distributing your first song to Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, TikTok, Instagram, wherever you want people to find it. Without signing any bad deals with labels or distribution companies. So you can get on your way of becoming an independent musician.
